Archeological Certification Program

Established in 1972 by the Arkansas Archeological Society and the Arkansas Archeological Survey, the Certification Program provides a means of obtaining formal extended training in various aspects of archeology outside of an academic degree program.

Instructor: Leslie C. “Skip” Stewart-Abernathy, Ph.D., de facto State Historical Archeologist since 1977.

Learn how to examine and document historic artifacts at the Historical Archeology Supplemental Certification/Enrichment Class. This workshop is part of the Arkansas Archeological Society Certification Program, and it is open to all Society members. Non-Society members are also welcome to enroll in the workshop but will be asked to join the Society for a nominal fee.

The three-day workshop begins with camaraderie on Friday night and class sessions on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Participants will receive personal, one-on-one instruction from Dr. Stewart-Abernathy through all field-work and lab activities. Dr. Stewart-Abernathy will also use modern technology to demonstrate how analysis of artifacts has evolved over the years.

The Arkansas Archeological Society and the Rockefeller Institute will provide all historic artifacts, including plates, bottles, and iron-pieces, and will provide all reference publications in order to properly examine and document all findings. If possible, workshop participants are asked to bring a camera in order to photo document historical artifacts to include in their reporting.
