About the Program
Do you have an interest in learning how to grow your own food? Have you been thinking of ways to earn extra income?
A workshop series on sustainable small acreage farming and agroforestry is currently being developed at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute in partnership with several organizations. It will begin by late summer 2009. This new program is designed for new and transitional farmers and will teach the skills necessary for a sustainable and profitable small farms. The workshops will include in-classroom and in-the-field training, farm tours, and mentoring. Topics will include the following areas:
- Beginning Farm Basics: soil, water, sunlight, compost
- Farming Methods: organic, no-till, integrated pest management
- Vegetable Propagation
- Specialty Crops
- Livestock and Poultry
- Harvesting and Preserving
- Agroforestry Opportunities and Practices
- Marketing
- Farm Planning
- Equipment Use and Handling
