Townsend Wolfe
As former director of the Arkansas Arts Center, Townsend Wolfe’s accomplishments over the past 33 years are literally too numerous to mention, but include the following:
- the main facility was enlarged in 1980 (now the Rockefeller Gallery);
- the Arts Center’s Decorative Arts Museum, a 3200-square foot facility, opened in 1985;
- the 1300-square foot Strauss Gallery was added to the west side of the Rockefeller Gallery in 1989;
- and, the expanded Arkansas Arts Center was dedicated and opened in 2000 and includes the Townsend Wolfe Gallery, Jeannette Edris Rockefeller Gallery, Jackson T. Stephens Gallery and the Alice Pratt Brown Atrium, adding 6,000 square feet at a cost of approximately $10 million.
Mr. Wolfe is a native of South Carolina. He received his bachelor of fine arts degree from the Atlanta Art Institute and his master’s degree from the Cranbrook Academy of Arts and advanced work at the Harvard Institute of Arts Administration. Mr. Wolfe’s list of professional awards and positions include serving on the National Council of Arts and National Endowment for the Arts, membership on the National Museum Services Board, and curator for an exhibition in the First Lady’s sculpture garden at the White House in 1995. He also received the Creative Spirit Award from the Pratt Institute in New York for his ongoing work in promoting African American artists.
