2010 Annual Legacy Program

Racial and Social Justice for Arkansas
April 30 – May 1, 2010

On April 7, 1968, Rockefeller held a public ceremony of mourning for the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was the only Southern governor to do so.The third annual Winthrop Rockefeller Legacy Program was a two-day event that focused on the influence and contributions Winthrop Rockefeller made to improve race relations and the overall quality of life for all social classes in Arkansas. Following the established model, the featured program included a panel discussion, free-of-charge to the public, that brought  together a group of individuals to discuss Governor Rockefeller’s impact in this area.

Similar to the previous two years, panelists were colleagues of WR or those who possess intimate knowledge of the subject matter. Featured speakers for 2010 event included the following:

  • The Honorable Robert Brown, Arkansas Supreme Court Justice
  • Dorothy Stuck, journalist and friend of Governor Rockefeller
  • Dr. William “Sonny” Walker, former director of the Arkansas Office of Economic Opportunity under Rockefeller, serving as the first black Cabinet member appointed in a Southern state
  • Dr. Todd Shields (moderator), Professor of Political Science and Director of the Diane D. Blair Center for Southern Politics and Society at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville
